Psalm 37 (the Third Penitential Psalm)

Rebuke me not, O Lord, In Thine indignation; nor chastise me in Thy wrath. For Thine arrows are fastened in me: and Thy hand hath been strong upon me. There is no health in my flesh, because of Thy wrath: there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins. For my iniquities are gone over my head: and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me. My sores are putrified and corrupted, because of my foolishness. I am become miserable, and am bowed down even to the end: I walked sorrowful all the day long. For my loins are filled with illusions; and there is no health in my flesh. I am afflicted and humbled exceedingly: I roared with the groaning of my heart. Lord, all my desire is before Thee, and my groaning, is not hidden from Thee. My heart is troubled, my strength hath left me, and the light of my eyes itself is not with me. My friends and my neighbours have drawn near, and stood against me. And they that were near me stood afar off; And they that sought my soul used violence. And they that sought evils to me spoke vain things, and studied deceits all the day long. But I, as a deaf man, heard not: and as a dumb man not opening his mouth. And I became as a man that heareth not: and that hath no reproofs in his mouth. For in Thee, O Lord, have I hope: Thou wilt hear me, O Lord my God. For I said: Lest at any time my enemies rejoice over me: and whilst my feet are moved, they speak great things against me. For I am ready for scourges; and my sorrow is continualy before me. For I will declare my iniquity: and I will think for my sin. But my enemies live, and are stronger than I: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. They that render evil for good, have detracted me, because I followed goodness. Forsake me not, O Lord my God: do not Thou depart from me. Attend unto my help, O Lord, the God of my salvation.

Glory be the the Father…

Psalm 50 (the Fourth Penitential Psalm)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me. To Thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before Thee: that Thou mayst be justified in Thy words, and mayst overcome when Thou art judged. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me. For behold Thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of Thy wisdom Thou hast made manifest to me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. To my hearing Thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels. Cast me not away from Thy face; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. I will teach the unjust Thy ways; and the wicked shall be converted to Thee. Deliver me from blood, O God, Thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol Thy justice. O Lord, Thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings Thou wilt not be delighted. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. Deal favorably, O Lord, in Thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. Then shalt Thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon Thine Altar.

Glory be the the Father…

Psalm 6 (the First Penitential Psalm)

O Lord, rebuke me not in Thine indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. And my soul is troubled exceedingly: but Thou, O Lord, how long? Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for Thy mercy’s sake. For there is no one in death, that is mindful of Thee: and who shall confess to Thee in hell? I have laboured in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: I will water my couch with my tears. My eye is troubled through indignation: I have grown old amongst all my enemies. Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord hath heard my supplication: the Lord hath received my prayer. Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily.

Glory be the the Father…

Psalm 69

O God, come to my assistance;
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek my soul.
Let them be turned backward and blush for shame, that desire evils to me.
Let them be presently turned away blushing for shame, that desire evils to me.
Let all that seek Thee rejoice and be glad in Thee. And let such as love Thy salvation say always:
The Lord be magnified.
But I am needy and poor:
O God, help me.
Thou art my helper and my deliverer:
O Lord, make no delay.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen

Psalm 83

How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts:
My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord.
My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God.
For the sparrow hath found herself a house, and the dove a nest for herself, where she may lay her young ones:
Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house, O Lord:
they shall praise Thee for ever and ever.
Blessed is the man whose help is from Thee:
in his heart he hath disposed to ascend by steps, In the vale of tears, in the place which he hath set.
For the lawgiver shall give a blessing, they shall go from virtue to virtue:
the God of gods shall be seen in Sion.
O Lord, God of hosts, hear my prayer:
give ear, O God of Jacob!
Behold, O God our Protector:
and look on the face of Thy Christ.
For better is one day in Thy courts above thousands.
I have chosen to be an abject in the house of my God, rather than to dwell in the tabernacles of sinners.
For God loveth mercy and truth: the Lord will give grace and glory.
He will not deprive of good things them that walk in innocence:
O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in Thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Psalm 84

Lord, Thou hast blessed Thy land:
Thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.
Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people:
Thou hast covered all their sins.
Thou hast mitigated all thy anger:
Thou best turned away from the wrath of thy indignation.
Convert us, O God our saviour:
and turn off Thine anger from us.
Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever:
or wilt Thou extend Thy wrath from generation to generation?
Thou wilt turn, O God, and bring us to life:
and Thy people shall rejoice in Thee.
Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy;
and grant us Thy salvation.
I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me:
for He will speak peace unto his people.
And unto His saints:
and unto them that are converted to the heart.
Surely His salvation is near to them that fear Him:
that glory may dwell in our land.
Mercy and truth have met each other:
justice and peace have kissed.
Truth is sprung out of the earth:
and justice hath looked down from heaven.
For the Lord will give goodness:
and our earth shall yield her fruit.
Justice shall walk before Him:
and shall set His steps in the way.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Psalm 85

Incline Thy ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am needy and poor. Preserve my soul, for I am holy:

save Thy servant, O my God, that trusteth in Thee.
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I have cried to Thee all the day. Give joy to the soul of Thy servant, for to Thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul.

For Thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild:

and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon Thee.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer:
and attend to the voice of my petition.

I have called upon Thee in the day of my trouble:

because Thou hast heard me.
There is none among the gods like unto Thee, O Lord:
and there is none according to Thy works.
All the nations Thou hast made shall come and adore before Thee, O Lord:

and they shall glorify Thy name.
For Thou art great and dost wonderful things:
Thou art God alone.
Conduct me, O Lord, in Thy way, and I will walk in Thy truth:
let my heart rejoice that it may fear Thy name.
I will praise Thee, O Lord my God:
with my whole heart,
and I will glorify Thy name for ever:
For Thy mercy is great towards me:

and Thou hast delivered my soul out of the lower hell.
O God, the wicked are risen up against me, and the assembly of the

mighty have sought my soul:
and they have not set Thee before their eyes.
And Thou, O Lord, art a God of compassion, and merciful, patient, and of much mercy, and true.

O look upon me, and have mercy on me:
give Thy command to Thy servant, and save the son of Thy handmaid.

Show me a token for good:
that they who hate me may see, and be confounded, because Thou, O Lord, hast helped me and hast comforted me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Psalm CXXXIII

Behold now, bless ye the Lord,
all ye servants of the Lord:
Who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.
In the night lift up your hands to the holy places,
and bless ye the Lord.
May the Lord out of Sion bless Thee,
He that made heaven and earth.

Glory be…

Anthem. have mercy on me, O Lord,

OR in Paschal time:
Alleluia, alleluis, alleluia.

Psalm Iv (4)

When I called upon Him, the God of my justice heard me; when I was in distress, Thou has enlarged me.

Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye be dull of heart? Why do ye love vanity and seek after lies?

Know ye also that the Lord hath made His Holy One wonderful;
the Lord will hear me, when I shall cry unto Him.

Be ye angry and sin not;
the things ye say in your hearts, be sorry for them upon your beds.

Offer up the sacrifice of justice, and trust in the Lord: Many say, Who showeth us good things?

The light of Thy countenance, O Lord, is signed upon us; Thou has given gladness in my heart.

By the fruit of their corn, their wine, and oil, they are multiplied.

In peace in the self-same, I will sleep, and I will rest.

For Thou, O Lord, singularly hast settled me in hope.
Glory be…

Psalm Ninety

He that dwelleth in the aid of the Most High, shall abide the protection of the God of heaven.

He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge; my God, in Him I will trust.

For He hath delivered me from the snare of the hungers, and from the sharp sword.

He will overshadow thee with His shoulders, and under His wings thou shalt trust.

His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.

Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark; of invasion, or of the noon-day devil.

A thousand shall fall at Thy side, and ten thousand at Thy right hand; but the evil shall not come nigh Thee.

But Thou shalt consider with Thine eyes, and shalt see the reward of sinners.

Because Thou, O Lord, art my hope; Thou hast made the Most High Thy refuge.

There shall no evil come to Thee; nor shall the scourge come near Thy dwelling.

For he hath given His Angels charge over Thee; to keep Thee in all Thy ways.

In their hands they shall bear Thee up, lest Thou dash Thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk; Thou shalt trample upon the lion and the dragon.

Because He hath hoped in me, I will deliver Him; I will protect him, because He hath known my Name.

He shall cry to me, and I will hear Him; I am with Him in His trouble; I will deliver Him, and I will glorify Him.

I will fill Him with length of days; and I will show Him my salvation.
Glory be…
